Golden High School Class of ’63

By Paulette Palmer

Kenneth Charles Palmer, age 68, died at Banner Hospice in Sun City West, Arizona, on Thursday, June 12, 2014 of complications related to ALS, with family members at his side.

Ken was born to the late Fay and Doris Palmer, July 15, 1945, in Denver, Colorado.  Ken grew up in Golden, Colorado and lived in the Denver Metro area for most of his life. He graduated from Golden High School in 1963, and attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. In 2010, he moved to Big Timber, Montana, where he spent 3 years living and loving the hunting, fishing and outdoors of that great state. In 2013, he relocated to the retirement community of Sun City West, Arizona.

In 1968, Ken started his career with U.S. Geological Survey in Lakewood, Colorado, as a cartographic tech, and later became an active member of the Business Partner Group until his retirement in 2001. Following retirement, Ken spent a few years managing his own mapping company. Once in Arizona, Ken went through the training to become a member of the Maricopa County Sheriffs Volunteer Posse (a crime prevention service organization designed to protect and assist residents of Sun City West).

Ken and his wife Paulette were also active volunteer members of the Sun City West PRIDE Organization (neighbors and fellow residents dedicated to keeping the community clean and beautiful). In addition to his love for community service, hunting, and fishing, Ken also enjoyed golf and loved to cook (with a Martini at his side). Ken had an amazing sense of humor, loved to mess with people and could make anyone smile with his rendition of "Happy Birthday".  His quick wit could turn any day into a good one.

Ken is survived by his wife Paulette, brother Gary (Nancy) Palmer, three children: Monica (Jeff Smith) of Colorado; Michael (Kristi) Palmer of Colorado; Sascha Palmer of Colorado; and one step-son Shawn (Jessica) Dickman of New Mexico. He is also survived by grandchildren: Jonah and Molly Smith; Macy and Kinsley Palmer; Brody, Cort and Ella Dickman; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Sam.

"Celebration of Life" ceremonies are in the planning stages. One will be held in late July in Golden, Colorado, and another in Sun City West in late January.  Dates, times and places will be provided when plans are finalized.
